Hotter than a Pepper Sprout

In Be Merry on April 23, 2010 at 12:04 pm

When the plant guy returned to Eastern Market a few weeks ago I felt the harsh sting of reality — I have no yard. Apartment living is tough when it comes to green space.

But being resourceful (and encouraged by my lovely mother), I communed with nature & planted herbs in a window box. My parents bought me basil, cilantro and rosemary at Surroundings, a pretty little plant shop on Lincoln Park.

I finally gave them a home this week!

If you're nice you can have some basil.

I also picked out two pepper plants at the local ACE hardware store. I’m growing them in a container behind my building. Check back for updates on their progress. (Anyone who followed my tomato plant fail of 2009 knows success is anything but certain. Place bets to see if they survive!)

Meet June Carter & Johnny Cash.

Digging in dirt really got me pumped for Earth Day. So if you live in the city without a yard, never fear — there’s surely a way to make an oasis in your own little world.

Some places around town for inspiration & supplies:

Frager’s Hardware
Garden District
Ace Hardware
